Look , rail against Gotham for its inviolable refusal to portray any of its characters in a consistent way is a sap ’s errand . But executive manufacturer Ken Woodruff ’s account of why the show is twist Poison Ivy from a kid to a busty , seductive 20 - something — through what I believe is the sorcerous magnate of creepiness — takes the cake . It takes 40 cakes . And that ’s terrible .
In a Hollywood Reporter interview talk about the time of year premiere of Gotham , Woodruff explains the abstract thought behind the conclusion :
We made the modification for two reasons : The character Ivy in the comics , one of her greatest powers is the power of conquest . Everyone was much more well-to-do with that with an aged actress as match to a stripling . We need to research that classic , sanctioned tycoon of Ivy . And we did n’t just make her older with that attack . When she ’s change and transformed , there ’s a real role modification as well . She ’ll still have some of the same traits , but she ’ll be much dismal , more manipulative than the Ivy we ’ve ascertain so far . There ’s a more vicious timber to her as well . It ’s more than just physical .
I will give him credit for being pretty honest about why they get on her up : we wanted to have the sexy lady on the show . I will also give the show quotation for understanding that a teenage femme fatale makes for uncomfortable television . ( Of course , the writers did n’t recollect that through when they added Silver St. Cloud to this mess hall of a show last time of year . )
On the other manus , is n’t she still a child ? Like , just because the thespian is n’t a stripling anymore does n’t stand for the fiber does n’t still have the mind of a child . She has n’t lived extra years just because some spook used his superpower to maturate her up .
Plus , she ’s not run low to have the power of conquest just because her body is abruptly older . That ’s not , like , an innate thing woman get when they go through puberty . If they wanted to have an common ivy that act like an adult Ivy , possibly they should have thrown in the towel and just gone with meter travel .
Same conk out for being dour and more manipulative . Unless the magic that age her up also changes her whole personality . Which would at least be an explanation , unlike every other monolithic character swerve on this show .
allow ’s also go into the idea that seduction is one of Ivy ’s “ Greco-Roman , canonical powers . ” It ’s not entirely improper , but her signature power is manipulate plant life . That ’s what makes her Poison Ivy and not just the usual random crazy that infects all of Gotham . But sure , brush off the thing that literally gives the character her name and rivet on her sex collection .
