Over at Slate , there ’s a hilarious excerpt from the new Holy Scripture of Kurt Vonnegut ’s letter : a condition paper assignment he gave to his originative writing students at the Iowa Writers Workshop in 1965 . Basically , he want them to read a Holy Writ of allegedly classic short fiction as if slimly tipsy , and then give each story a letter form . And retrospect the three best and three worst stories , as if they were editors . The good part :
As for your condition written document , I should wish them to be both misanthropical and religious . I require you to adore the Universe , to be easily delighted , but to be prompt as well with impatience with those artists who pique your own deep notion of what the Universe is or should be .
Best advice ever . take the whole thing over at Slate .
