David Cronenbergis best known for his films that explore how thehuman bodycan be transformed , typically in pretty gruesome fashion . His new feature , The Shrouds , continue that with a somber interrogation of death , grief , and their intersection with modern - day technology — and by letting the filmmaker get a little more personal .
put in a “ deceivingly even-tempered close - future , ” the photographic film centers on Karsh ( Vincent Kassel ) , a technical school entrepreneur who ’s been using novel computer software to watch his numb married woman ( Diane Kruger ) decay in veridical time . Just as he ’s ready for this Shroud technical school to get a wider sacking , all the Robert Graves presently using it get smashed up . Soon , Karsh find himself scramble to figure out what ’s going on and uncertain who to trust — up to and potentially include his married woman ’s sister , who he ’s started sleeping with and is also played by Kruger .
Cronenberg wroteThe Shroudsfollowing the death of his married woman Carolyn in 2017 , which render extra free weight to moments in the trailer like Karsh ’s first step line about need to join his late wife in the coffin . The logline scream the film a “ profoundly personal reckoning with sorrow and a descent into noir - tinged dystopia , ” which is all present in the preview , along with a svelte sprint of clowning . Cronenberg riddle the film at Cannes 2024 , where it racked up solid reviews from critic .
