Director Jaume Collet - Serra released The Shallows this week but , before that , he was long attached to adapt Akira into a live action film . Akira , of course , is famous for its 1988 alive adaption but the new version did n’t happen . ( Insert “ Tetsuo ” scream here ) . “ It is very difficult,”he told us of the job . “ It ’s bounteous than film . ”
Well , there may be some movement on that front after all .
On Meet the Movie Press , former Variety and Wrap newsman Jeff Sneider propose that Warner Bros. is court manager Justin Lin to adapt the manga - reverse - iconic animated film . Lin is one of the best , great - ordered series natural process directors out there . He ’s credit with breathe Modern life history into the quick and ferocious franchise , helming four films in that serial , and has Star Trek Beyond coming out in July .
We most recently discover thatLin want to jump into the Space Jam franchise at Warner Bros. , with star Lebron James . Well , Sneider hint the studio apartment could use that film as a bargaining chip shot to get Lin to do Akira . ( As in , “ Make Akira and we ’ll allow you do Space Jam 2 . ” ) To me , Space Jam seems more commercial than Akira but hey , I ’m not a studio head .
At this stage , this is just a hearsay . And even if it ’s not , there ’s no warranty Lin will take the bait . The biggest take by here is Warner Bros. still really need to bring Akira back to the big screen . I ’m certain we ’ll find out more as Lin comes out to talk about Star Trek but , he ’d sure enough be a great pick for the film . We ’ll be keeping an eye on this .
