Boeing has announced that it ’s working with the flying taxi startup Kitty Hawk , to “ collaborate on future travail to advance good urban air mobility . ” The announcement of the so - call strategic partnership is pretty light on details , but it ’s an affirmative signal for people who ’ve been expect on futuristic , consumer - face air power technologies .
Kitty Hawk has developed the Cora , an autonomous and fully electrical flight taxi that has reportedly performed well over the preceding year during tests in New Zealand . The Cora reportedly flies at speeds of roughly 110 miles per hr at altitudes anywhere from 500 to 3,000 feet . But it ’s not quick for the paying world . At least not yet .
“ work with a company like Kitty Hawk brings us nigher to our end of safely boost the future tense of mobility , ” Steve Nordlund , vice president and general manager of Boeing NeXt , enounce in a statement postedonline . “ We have a shared sight of how masses , goods and musical theme will be channelize in the future , as well as the base hit and regulative ecosystem that will underpin that transportation . ”

Sebastian Thrun , one of the intellect behind Google X , is the beginner and chief operating officer of Kitty Hawk and has a chronicle of developing exciting new applied science , from robots at various DARPA challenge to spearhead Google ’s self - driving car efforts . In short , he ’s a guy that you do n’t want to count against .
“ Kitty Hawk was set out to pull ahead applied science in escape and contribute fresh creation to life , ” order Thrun . “ I am aroused about our companies work together to speed make safe electric flight of stairs a realness . ”

Paleofuture is about asskeptical as it comeswhen we hear about fly cars and flying hack , autonomous or otherwise . And while we do n’t have many details ( or any literal information at all about what this new partnership is about ) it ’s a very good mansion for engineering when company like Boeing are take them seriously . This promulgation should definitely be taken seriously .
But it should be noted that Kitty Hawk is n’t go a fly car . The Cora is a upright take - off and landing ( VTOL ) taxi . The primary consumption for this vehicle will be transporting people in the tune , not win over from a driving vehicle to a vanish fomite .
This declaration does n’t necessarily mean that fly taxi are just around the box , even with all those caveats . But it ’s hard not to get excited when companies like Kitty Hawk are doing the hard work with really smart masses largely behind the aspect . Unlike someother companieswe might mention .

Uber , we ’re see at you and your bullshit . How ’s that fly taxi you promised us in 2017 was justtwo year out ? That ’s what we thought .
