In the DC TV universe that Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim have create with Arrow and The Flash , we ’ve all been waitress for two event : For Oliver and Felicity to in the end do it , and for Harrison Wells to be reveal his truthful identity operator to the Flash and his friends . The episode is title “ The Trap , ” and most of it centers around amaze Eobard / Wells to include he ’s the Reverse - Flash , but also concede he toss off Barry ’s mother 15 year ago so Barry ’s dad can lastly get out of prison . After a lengthy , genial - of - goofy - even - for - the - Flash sequence where they hook up Cisco to a lucid dream machine so he can relive his ambition - memory from the other timeline , which admittedly has the welfare of appropriate Barry and the SuperSTARS to know exactly what give out down there , including Eobard ’s name . But that ’s not the literal twist here .
I do n’t want to muff your idea , but given that Eobard / Wells is very , very smart , and the SuperSTARS are often very , very obtuse , but as it turn out the Reverse - Flash has prepare a gob for them . They only realise when Wells saunters the right way through the shell that was hypothesize to protect Cisco ; Joe , who was blot out in the corner with Barry ( enh , sure , why not ) tries to photograph wells to protect Cisco ; Barry , in a burst of selfishness the show does n’t comment on at all , uses his speed to catch the bullets so that Wells can still confess to Nora ’s slaying — he misses one , and Wells fall to the footing , dead .
And then he transform back into Hannibal Bates , the Everyman .
So not only did Eobard / Wells foresee that the whiz were trying to trap him , but he sent a back - up in his place ( with hope of freedom from the STAR Labs prison , whose sinister undertones all of a sudden make a lot more sense ) . Wells , in dependable top-notch - villain fashion , call Barry and the STARS to confess to his indistinguishability and his crimes , his desire to kill Barry , and the fact that despite all of this , he truly revel working with all of them .
We ’ve already see a version of this scene before , when Wells confess to Cisco in the erased timeline . But this do - over is possibly even more effective , and that ’s because “ The Trap ” does a wonderful task at remind us how much Barry and Wells complement each other . Sure , Wells murder Barry mommy and wants nothing more than to kill Barry , at least after he arrives back in his own time . But he does n’t just learn Barry to use his powers , he invigorate him to be a hero . When a construction is on fervidness and Barry nut out , it ’s Wells who calms him down , reminds him he can do it , then patiently explains he needs to move his arms in really firm circles to create a vacuum to suck the air out of the room ( a Flash strip staple ) . Wells may not intend to , and he may not even like , but it ’s this guidance that help turn Barry Allen into the Flash at least as much as the mote gas fortuity .
Barry and the others rush into what they ’ve nickname Wells ’ Time Vault , and realize he ’s been spy on them EVERYWHERE . feed that Iris has just figured out that all the metahumans appear after the corpuscle gas incident , Barry see she ’s in worry and rushes off . As it turns out , Eddie is suggest to Iris — a marriage offer Wells in his Reverse - Flash costume turn back by grabbing the tintinnabulation and toss Eddie aside . Eddie is quick to fight the Yellow Speedster and betray in social club to protect Iris , but that ’s when the Flash shows up ! The Reverse - Flash melt down off — with Eddie — and the Flash afford chase , but not before Iris suddenly realizes that it may be Barry in the red-faced lawsuit .
“ The Trap ” efficaciously ends there , and but we get two the series ’ earmark Wells Moments to wrap it up . The first is a vista where Eobard Thawne give away his name and identity to his great - with child - great-(whatever-)grandfather Eddie . Eddie turn from fierce to whole dumbfound , and it seems a pretty valid discovery to be stupefy at . But then we get Wells flashback to Barry in a comatoseness , where he delivers a truly great monologue to this younger embodiment of the hero who will become his most hat adversary .
You bonk , I have n’t talked a lot about how awesome Tom Cavanaugh has been as Wells , because basically we all know Tom Cavanaugh is awful . That ’s just understand , and it ’s seemed redundant to cite it in these recaps . Of of course he ’s bang-up . He ’s Tom Cavanaugh . But in last night ’s sequence , more than any other this time of year , Cavanaugh elevate what would be a pleasant , goofy , but fun superhero show into some damned fine amusement . He ’s not only made the Wells character study all time of year , but made him fascinating , likable , occult and immensely magnetic . take heed him come up to his hated enemy , while he lies lost in a comatoseness , is some of the finest playacting you ’ll see in any modern superhero show . The difference in Wells is so clear , so palpable , that Cavanaugh sell it completely — no pocket-size task when he ’s playing a character a decisively comic book - y as the Reverse Flash .
So let ’s all take a moment to apprise how much Tom Cavanaugh has done for The Flash . Because not only am I lamentable that the character will no longer be part of the SuperSTARS team , I ’m also disquieted that this imply that Cavanaugh might not be returning as a full - clock time castmember for time of year 2 — and all this despite the fact I ’ve known this was hail since at least the ninth episode ! If that does n’t prove how good The Flash has become over its inaugural time of year , I do n’t bed what does .
Assorted Musings :
• For some ground , the CW groove keep now and then giving me snipping of NCIS from CBS while I was attempt to watch over The Flash . I do n’t have it off that I miss anything — at least more than usual — but if I did that might be the reason .
• So Barry created the Gideon AI In the future tense ? Interesting .
• Cisco Being Genuinely Funny , # 28 : Barry asks Cisco if he can hack into Gideon ’s database to erase their little chit - chat , and Cisco asks Gideon to show him her database , revealing some dementedly scifi - await nonsensicality . Cisco just laughs and says “ NOPE . ”
• Eddie asks Joe ’s blessing to hook up with Iris , because he ’s that form of buster . Joe enunciate “ NO ” and gives zero explanation . Joe is the guy who has always been shady of Wells , but it seems like Joe ’s horrible interpersonal family relationship are causing more problems than they ’re helping .
• come to : Joe finally say Barry the reason he wo n’t give Eddie his benediction to marry Iris — Iris really know Barry , even if she has n’t figured it out yet . Is it just me , or does that seem incredibly messed up to other people as well ?
• Of course the SuperSTARS have to wear out ridiculous VR glasses to see into Cisco ’s dreaming , but Barry ’s look incisively like Captain Cold ’s unique shades from the comedian . It ’s pretty sweet .
• I find the pauperism to point that when Iris had her flashback to Barry in his coma , actress Candice Patton apply an splendid performance . Her lines were drippy , but her anguish at possibly miss her take over brother / love interest seemed really genuine . I ’m moderately certain Iris ’ problems are base solely in the writers room .
• Speaking of good acting , when Wells arrives at STAR Labs for the trap , Caitlin does not seem like she ’s plainly hiding a major enigma , which is something Barry still has n’t achieved .
• Iris finally gain Barry may be the Flash when he gives her a small galvanic shock , just like Barry ’s soundbox did when he was in a coma . It ’s a more insidious cue than the Flash go 100 % like Barry whenever he talked , but I ’m glad she compute it out either way .
• Next workweek : Grodd ! Looks like the gargantuan malevolent telepathic Gorilla gorilla has been the Reverse - Flash ’s contingency programme all along . CAN’T. WAIT .
