There are the great unwashed so taken up with geartrain that they ’ll travel the existence just to blob a uncommon locomotive . And then there’sJason Shron , who ’s not only built a replication of a rider train car in his basement , he ’s also found a clever way to simulate a train ride bystrapping a diminutive video camerato his good example railway line .
If Jason Shron ’s name rings a bell , it ’s belike because back in 2013 he was all over the intelligence afterrebuilding a Canadian VIA Rail rider coachin the basement of his Toronto home after managing to buy one that was taken out of service for less than $ 10,000 . Shron disassembled its guts , shipped it back home , and rebuilt the coach ’s interior inside a cellar mockup animate every detail from seat , to no spitting signage ( smoking was still allow while this coach was in service ) , to authentic VIA runway branding and even blankets .
A motion blurred photo of scenery in one windowpane helped produce the head game that the train was in apparent motion , but it was n’t terribly convincing . Thanks to the pandemic , Shron came up with aclever path to upgradehis simulated rail travel experience . Being keep apart at home over the past year also gave Shron a portion of time to work on his model railroad ( he actuallyowns a company that makes exemplar trains ) which is arecreation of a runway linebetween Toronto , Ontario , and Montreal , Quebec , known as the Kingston Subdivision .

Shron has recreated the route in such incredible detail that he was able to welt a tiny GoPro Session camera to one of his model trains and record the journeying take up to a genuine - life occlusive known as Brockville Station . When the footage was edited to await like it was the view out of doors of a VIA Rail passenger gearing ’s window ( complete with simulated reflections on the glass and authentic sound effects of the train and passenger ) it ’s an improbably convincing simulation .
This video is just a proof of concept , however . Eventually , Shron plans to install giant screen ( either massive LCDs or rear - design screens ) behind the windows of his basement rider coach-and-four with live feeds from his modelling railroad so that anyone who wax aboard legitimately feels like they ’re rolling along the Kingston Subdivision route . Building and take a miniature mockup seems like an overly complicated elbow room to produce this effect when Shron could just buy a just the ticket and film a ride along on the actual route for maximum authenticity , but this is a man who rebuilt a passenger coach in his basement — he seems to have no interest in taking the easy road .
